Reishi
Ganoderma spp.
A medicinal mushroom highly regarded for its potential to help balance the immune system and nourish the blood by helping to improve oxygenation and lower blood pressure. Found wild in Maine (G. tsugae) but also cultivated in our fruiting room (G. lucidum).
Qualities: bitter, warm, neutral
Reishi has sooooo many beneficial properties and fun facts, but here are just a few. Reishi can help promote the function of natural killer cells in your immune system (the ones that kill the bad bugs within our bods) & also patrols potential tumor cells and prevents them from growing. This mushroom is known as an adaptogen, a substance that can help maintain homeostasis in the body’s systems. This means it can stimulate the immune system or it can dampen an overactive immune system, making this a lovely choice for folx who may have a compromised immune system (but always check with your health care provider). The bitterness found in reishi is stimulating to the liver, helping with digestion and absorption of foods. Try reishi as a tea (remember though: bitter!) with some other yummy flavors like cinnamon and ginger or tulsi and rosehips. You can also take reishi as a tincture, our preferred method, for quick, easy mushroom medicine.
